Band 111 Squadron is lucky enough to have its own Marching Band, not only does this give the Squadron a good appearance in the public eye but it gives cadets the opportunity to learn a new skill. The Band consists of Fifes, Glocks, a mix of snare and tenor drums, a bass drum and a cymbalist.
The band plays traditional marching songs such as; Great Escape, Blaydon Races and Prussia but new songs are being learnt all the time, the ability to learn and incorporate new songs makes the band an ever changing enjoyable experience. The unique band songs and the wide range of instruments give a clear crisp sound, cadets can undertake band as a project and earn a badge after they play 3 parades.
Parades include; charity parades, the Battle of Britain Parade and the very important Remembrance day parade. These parades are typically expected from a squadron with a band. 111 however have really broke the mould, and In August of 2004, travelled to Belgium and played almost continuously for a week in various locations in and around the town of Ieper. This was in honour of the people lost during the war during the "Four days of Ypres". On the final day of remembrance, the band marched through the Menin gate itself, this is an extremely moving and spine chilling experience and not to mention a once in a lifetime opportunity. More information on the Menin Gate can be found out here: Menin Gate
The Band is a valuable asset to 111, and the more people who get involved, the better. The Drum Major (CWO Riggall) is very proud of the bands achievements, and we all hope to see more in the near future. If you're interested in the band, you don't have to know anything about music or instruments, we will give you the experience and the practice you need to become a musician! |
