ACADEMIC CADETS COME ON BOARD!

Three cadets from 111 (Sunderland) Squadron have achieved top awards this week from Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear at HMS Calliope in Gateshead.

The Lord Lieutenant, Nigel Sherlock, who is an official representative for Her Majesty the Queen, conducted the award Ceremony presenting various awards to serving cadets and members of the region’s reserve forces.

During the Ceremony, Cadet Flight Sergeant Cara Riggall was appointed to be the Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Tyne and Wear after attending and passing an interview and selection in Gosforth, Newcastle.

Some of her duties will include escorting royalty if they ever visit the region and assisting the Lord Lieutenant in his official duties.

Cara, 17, of Cricklewood Drive, Penshaw said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected for this important role, I can’t wait to begin assisting royalty, especially if I get to meet The Queen!”

Cadet Sergeants Helen Sutherland, 18 and James Kitchen, 17, were also among those receiving awards. They were presented their BTEC first diploma in public services, which is the equivalent of four GCSEs grade A to C and is internationally recognised by both institutes of higher education and places of work.

The BTEC, which is open to all cadets free of charge, is completed by the means of coursework over the period of a year.

Squadron Training Officer Kelly Molloy said: “The BTEC is an excellent opportunity for the cadets to receive extra GCSEs to add to their CV. I believe this will ultimately result in them getting a better job or possibly a place in college. My next aim is to get more cadets involved with the award.”
