CADETS COME ONLINE

Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Mary Smith officially opened 111 Squadron’s new ICT suite this week at the unit HQ in Thorney Close, Sunderland.
The suite, which is equipped with interactive whiteboard, wireless laser printer and 5 networked PC's is the only one like it in the North East.
The development was made possible when the unit was awarded £4,957 by "Awards for all" National Lottery.
CI James Yeo, 21, who applied for the grant said: "The Squadron had been discussing such a suite for many years, so I decided to approach the National Lottery for funding, I was shocked when we received the full amount for the project."
The ceremony took place in the presence of the Staff, Cadets and Civilian Committee and the Mayor had the opportunity to chat with the cadets and see what they were up to in their projects.
Councillor Smith said: "I am truly impressed at the work that goes on here, it really is a well kept secret! I think the new suite is excellent value for money and I have thoroughly enjoyed my evening."
The Mayor also presented Mr Ted Morris ,78, of Allendale Road Sunderland with an award for outstanding contribution to the Air Cadets over the years. Ted has been a civilian instructor with 111 Squadron for 22 years after uniformed service in both the Air Cadet Organisation and the RAF. Ted currently coordinates the units flying allocations and enjoys driving cadets to RAF Leeming to fly.
He said: "I have always striven to provide the best service for the cadets here and I will continue to do so. I've seen many cadets come and go and I'm very proud of what they've achieved. I am genuinely touched to receive such an honour".
Flight Lieutenant Peter Dixon, Officer Commanding 111 Squadron said: "It was a big night for the unit, I am delighted with the new suite and the advantages it will bring to the training of our cadets. It was also great to see Mr Morris presented with a well deserved award by the Mayor."
