Shooting Cadets at all levels of the Air Training Corps have the opportunity to participate in the sport of rifle shooting. (Dependant on age) The Squadron has a very good reputation for its shooting capabilities! Cadets go to various Army facilities to shoot; the rifles which we shoot are; the .22 no 8 rifle, the L81 Target Rifle and the L98 General purpose rifle. During your time in cadets, you may also handle different types of rifles.
If shooting becomes a passion you may get the opportunity to shoot down at Bisley, Surrey for numerous different competitions such as the Inter Service Cadet Rifle Meeting (I.S.C.R.M) and also civilian competitions.
The Cadet 100 competition is also shot at Bisley and an award goes to the top 100 shots from the tri services cadets (Army, Sea and Air). Many Sunderland cadets achieve this award each year.
In 2004, 111 Squadron captured ALL of the shooting trophies in Durham/Northumberland Wing, a somewhat proud achievement, during the same year Flight Sergeant Andrew Whitwood was chosen, because of unique talent, to shoot for Great Britain in the Athelings competition in Canada!
From the moment you join you will have the opportunity to shoot at different ranges, with different types of rifles. (Dependant on age) NB - Safety is paramount with all ATC activities and shooting is certainly no exception, conditions are controlled on a shooting range and each cadet is fully trained in whichever rifle they will be using. |
