Flight Simulator 111 Squadron's Simulator is loosely based on the Canberra T 17, and flies a crew of three cadets (Pilot, Navigator and RADAR operator). The simulator is completely versatile and boasts many realistic features, from the throttle and control column to the RADAR and Engineering kit onboard. The SIM also has headsets for internal communication and external communication with Air Traffic Control and the ground crew if repairs are needed.
The Canberra's name was chosen as WR-111, the outer shell, (kindly provided by SETA) interior and comms systems were installed by the CI's Mr Morris and Mr Rosendale (A huge thank you and well done!)
The Computer systems were set up and networked by CI Joe Gordon, (A computer Specialist) and the systems are now maintained by Technical Crew; CI Yeo, SGT Davis, SGT Smith, CPL Waite, CPL Tilt & CPL Wallis. The shot below shows the SIM interior and equipment; The RADAR can be seen on the right at the rear of the aircraft and the engineering screen is also visible, The Pilot seat and control column can also be seen, Nav however cannot be seen from this camera angle.
This area of the SIM is still being developed however it is to become a manned ATC station with the ADDED ability to become Naval vessels and other planes to give more of an experience to those flying the Simulator. It can be seen that the station is currently being used as a submarine, this is for a training exercise.
This area is where the technical crew can add extra detail into the flying sorties, the screens monitor the crews visual and radar displays and the switches on the far right operate additional things such as chaff, smoke, flack and engine fires.
Flying is a regular thing that can be from 45 Minutes to 1 and a half hours. However Aircrew weekends are usually held to enhance this experience. These Exercises can last up to 1 week and usually occur in the Easter holidays. Have a look at the Easter Exercise page for more details. 111's Simulator is undergoing constant updates, and its Development from late 2005 to Early 2006 can be seen, in pictures, on the Photo Gallery Section of this website. |
