CADETS FLY INTO HELP

Air cadets from 111 Sunderland squadron are using their flight simulator to raise money for the earthquake victims in Asia.

The cadets, based at Thorney Close are taking part in a sponsored flight to deliver aid to the disaster hit areas. The cadets will be flying in ‘real world’ weather conditions and navigating the entire journey on their own this weekend.

The flight is estimated to take around 24 hours return and will be flown by a number of cadets. They are hoping to raise as much money as possible from the flight and will be donating it to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

The simulator, based on a Canberra aircraft uses the latest available technology to provide the most realistic flying experience. The cadets also recently received a grant for £3500 for new computers from the Sunderland Community Chest. The computers have since been incorporated in to the simulator helping to make the flight possible.

Commanding Officer Flight Lieutenant Peter Dixon is delighted with the cadet’s enthusiasm towards helping those in need. He said: “As soon as the idea was suggested there was no stopping them. It’s all planned and now all we need is sponsorship to try and help these people affected by the earthquake.”
